What Tools Are For

The tools help read tide tables without noise. Each one answers a single question: when water rises, when it falls, how a chart lines up with a page of numbers. They are built to be checked by hand, not trusted blindly. Nothing predicts weather or currents beyond the table itself.

Files, Scripts, A Log

Every tool keeps three things: a file of notes, a script that runs, and a log of changes. The log is short and factual, noting what changed and why. Nothing is hidden inside comments or clever naming. Anyone opening the folder later can read the log first and understand the rest.

The Room And Desk

The desk holds a lamp, a ruler, and stacks of printed tide tables. A single chair faces a window with no view of water, only sky. Tools are tested here before they leave the desk. The room stays uncluttered on purpose, so nothing distracts from the paragraph being written.

From Paper To Script

Work begins on paper, with a short paragraph describing what a tool should do. The paragraph is read aloud, revised, and read again. Only then does it become a script, small and plain. Nothing is added that the paragraph did not ask for. The script is tested against the paper, not the other way round.

In the workshop

SketchesNothing is written until the whole job fits on one sheet, including what can go wrong. Two tools that do nearly the same thing are merged before either one grows. The sheet with the plan is kept, and the tool is checked against it a season later. The first version is the plainest thing that could work, and it usually stays.

StockA tool is a few files and a page of notes, and it is copied whole when it moves. Each script is short enough to read in one sitting, and is read that way once a year. The parts are plain: text files, short scripts and a log that is read every morning. Old versions are kept in a folder of their own, so nothing has to be remembered.

WindowA second machine under the bench does the slow jobs overnight. Work happens in the mornings, before the room warms up and the light moves. The desk is under the window, with one machine on it and a notebook beside it. The kettle is nearer than the printer, which says how often each is used.
